It is a futile attempt to make the child open their mouth wider so you can reach the back teeth to brush them properly!

Children learn what they need to do from watching you. You instinctively know that, so you do what you want the child to do. Same happens when you feed a baby from a spoon. Try keeping your own mouth closed, it's very difficult.

It's fairly obvious - it gets them to concentrate and if they see an adult doing something which looks odd/funny then they will probably try to copy it, therefore allowing you to brush their teeth easily.
Of course, if you don't want your child to show you their teeth so you can brush it, and have them run around and be annoying and never go to sleep, then fine.

Just helps them get a grasp on what they are supposed to do to brush their teeth effectively. Audio and visual effects are what little kids pick up on the best.

the same reason that it's impossible to feed a baby without opening your own mouth as you hold the spoon up to theirs. I don't know what this reason is.

With children it's like monkey- see monkey- do. If you set an example for them they know what to do. When you open your mouth you are showing them what you want them to do.

you do it so the child imitates what you are doing and keep his mouth open since they always try to close it and suck the toothbrush.

Because we teach our kids by example. We can tell them how to do something and they don't always understand. Kids will use mimickry to learn how to do something more often than not.
