That is something that I am struggling with. Take some personality tests, lots are available online. spend some time alone to think, write on 43things.com . That is amazingly helpful. Write in a diary or online diary. Read the Desiderata. Look it up in google.
Think about the energy you put into pretending. What if you used it to be "authentic"? Accept the idea that "I'm me" and "I like me" if you don't like "me" too bad.
Don't waste time spending it with people you would rather not. You never know how long that you have, you know? :)

Slip under the covers, take off your underwear, slide your hand between your legs....oh wait, that's pleasing yourself, sorry!
Actually, a rather involved question. I would think that simply considering normal life, the choices that one has to make on a daily basis, would help. Just think of how you react to certain stimuli, things you see all the time. Watch the news. how does that make you feel? Watch kittens or puppies playing, what does that make you want to do? Figure out how you will react to any standard situation. Then, when you know what your reactions will be, ask your self why you did it that way.
I firmly believe that none of us are any more than the sum total of our life experiences. Everything that has happened to us in our lifetime, good or bad, the decisions we have made, the choices we've taken, constitute who we are. Good luck!

Search your heart and find out what makes you most happy and explore it fully. If you think, "it's taboo" don't worry, just do it. Cut everyone else's opinions and voices out. Finding you is about you! We all hear voices, repetitions of what we are taught and told, we must learn to explore our selves. If we find that we are abnormal or unjust, we must constrain ourselves. However, most of us are not. We must be honest! That is what is most difficult for most humans...especially those who love and listen to our parents. Prove me wrong and I'll give you a medal!

The best way to know oneself is to be involved in teamwork. Usually, a person discovers his true self from his team members' opinion about him.

1. Spend time alone
2. Force yourself to do things you wouldn't ordinarily do to see what the outcome is. We are actually stronger then we think at times.
