ab are there
cd are not
ef are there
ghi are not
jk are there
lmnop are not
qr are there.
It looks like you are leaving out a prime number of letters each time. First 2, then 3, then 5. If this is the pattern, 7 letters should be left out next.
stuvwxy are left out.
Now I have a problem. The pattern appears to have two letters in after a prime number of letters is left out. But there's only one letter of the alphabet left - z.
Maybe you should start over with the alphabet? I'm not certain, but that's a reasonable suggestion.
With that in mind, I'd say that "za" comes next.
EDIT:
After looking back at some of the solutions, I will say that the 2,3,5,8 solution is also a good one.
Those are consecutive terms in the Fibonacci sequence, and so that's also a possibility. Prime numbers happened to be the first sequence that I saw.
Funny how these problems work out.

The Series wud be .....
ab ef jk qr za
as ----- between ab and ef ----> cd are missing (2 alphabets)
----- between ef and jk ----> ghi are missing (3 alphabets)
----- between jk and qr ----> lmnop are missing (5 alphabets)
2,3,5 is the series of prime numbers
no next prime number is 7
count 7 alphabets from r --- s t u v w x y -- the next two alphabets are z and a (countinued ring)
so answer is ----> the next combination in that sequence is "za"

ab..cd..ef..ghi..jk..lmnop..qr............
2 letters are skipped off between ab and ef,3 letters between ef and jk and 2+3=5 letters are skipped between jk and qr.
Therefore letters to be skipped in the series = 3+5 = 8
Final answer : ab

1. The letter pairs are adjacent
2. The pairs are separated by 2,3 and 4 letters respectively
3 Therefore, the next sequence will be separated by 5 letters
(s,t,u,v, w) and will be a pair (xy)
Answer: xy
Hope this helps!
