I fully accept that each US and UK death in Iraq is a tragedy. However, the reall violence is being perpetuated in what is in reality a civil war, with us being caught up in the middle. How was Saddam Hussein able to keep a lid on the festering unrest, and why can't we?

It is civil annihilation between two Muslim sects of Iraq.
The Shia muslims and Sunni muslims regard that the people from the other group are NOT Muslims. They regard that the other Sect , as infidels , must be killed .
What logic ! Only Muslims can understand it.

You are not the only one to see this. Many see it. The Iraqis are violent, divided into many factions, and hate each other, and us as well. Seeing one newscast of the destruction, and killing, is enough. That is why you hear so many saying that all Muslims are violent. I am certain that there are exceptions, and that some may even be peaceful , however destruction and violence prevail. As for Saddam he was a cruel dictator and they may have feared him. We are trying to establish an Iraqi Government, to rule Iraq, we do not have any plans to rule in Iraq. How soon will there be an Iraqi Government?

Perhaps the best long-term policy here is to wait until there are only women and children and old men left alive. Then there might be a chance for peace. The toughest job in the world is to try to "save" people from themselves...

What then is a lid. is that not a wall to shield the view upon corruption. for one to have complete command over another life as though he seeded then himself. even if it were his own seed they would still cry out to a God who would not hear them because that god would have remained Saddam, who would have kept hell chambers contained for his pleasures and whims. no. a lid is but a seal where the soul is held , and the mornings and groanings are felt and heard by other free souls. No. to the lid suddam has taken out of the hands of the people of free soul.

Because Saddam didn't have Iran "feeding the flames" like they are now. Some people will say Iran isn't doing anything but people with a working brain can figure it out fairly easily

If you pour oil on a fire, you then cannot argue that the FIRE is burning the oil and you have no role in the burning.

Saddam kept a lid on all problems by force and violence. (It seems that he was totally indiscriminate in who he was willing to kill).
