Especially for Cinemascope films like How the West was Won.
Would you really prefer to watch the Pan & Scan(dal) version?

I think its a perfect place to put your captions.

I prefer to watch movies in the original aspect, none of this pan and scan cr p. But with a widescreen television I barely notice the black bars at the top and bottom, plus I'm usually enjoying the film too much to ponder on such trivial things.

As eamonn says, they are good for subtitles or closed captions, otherwise they can be irritating. But more than the bars, I find it irritating when old system films are broadcast in widescreen format. If you don't happen to have a widescreen TV, you often can't see the faces of the people talking, just an empty expanse of air. This is much more annoying than a couple of black bars top and bottom.

Grrrrrrr... I'm a purist, and prefer to see the film as it was originally intended to be seen. Scorcese said it best "You're technically redirecting the film" if you go to pan and scan. You're doing the director and cinematographer a great injusitice if you choose to see the film in the pan and scan version. They went to a lot of work to set up the scenes, and they want you to see all of it. I also think people miss out on the film if they don't view it widescreen.

I don't dislike the bars so much as how much smaller the picture is on WS. I don't have a big screen tv, so WS movies make the screen about 6 inches tall, and I like to see things a bit bigger than that.

seems none of you even understand what widescreen is...
i would much rather have the black bars (which i stopped even noticing years ago) and see the whole movie than have about half chopped off on either side... get a clue, folks... the black bars allow the entire frame to be used as intended...

I dont notice the black bars on my old telly, like substitles they sort of dissapear from my mind in the first five minutes. However I rather they just do a black bar showing then some horrible scrunching up Ive seen making actors look like alien or the bars coming in and out during the film itself

I accept as true with the 1st 2 individuals (MoneyOrder and... um... despite her call is). it is a sprint nerve-racking on the commencing up (in case you're no longer familiar with them), yet you get used to it. Now, i think of it honestly advances the "action picture-staring at" journey. despite if the action picture stinks, you experience such as you're staring at something expert, fairly than some lame Lifetime television-action picture.

I hate them, but supposedly the larger the TV the less noticiable they are. On small TVs I feel like I'm missing something
