He is a gaming fan and has fond memories of this when he was a child. But do I waste money on what will be a second hand gift?

The ORIGINAL ones are great id complete...beware of cheap (non-Atari)copies made a few years ago though if you're ordering online. Also try to get a few game carts with it....nothing worse than only having one!!

Unless he's a collector, I would go with the Atari Flashback 2 that has a bunch of old Atari games built into it.
