Kristen blackmailed JR that the baby she had in California was his. But it was another oilman's son. When JR found out from a private dick what Kristin had been doing, he threatened to completely annihilate her in society and have her blackballed everywhere forever.Since Kristin's older sister Sue Ellen was married to JR, that meant Kristin had nowhere and nobody to turn to.
Since JR had mortgaged Southforkfor an oil lease loan his pappy and mom and even Bobby weren't speaking to him.JR had generally screwed everyone out of everything he could, including Cliff Barnes, so Kristin thought there would be so many people under suspicion she could get away with it.
She snuck up on him in the dark in the office and shot him, and when he came out of surgery after the operation to get the bullet wound out he named her.

It was his girlfriend - Kirsten, she was the one with the long dark hair and pretty face. I was only a kid when it happened, but I totally remember the hype for it, I even put a bet on with my mum and I won!!!
