Get your daughter an iPod shuffle. They are the lowest end of iPODs. Not only are they small and light weight, they can also store quite a few songs. The new iPod shuffle is 1GB in size which holds about 240 song and costs about $79 (according to apple's website).

The reason I don't recommend the other iPods is because this is the cheapest one and I don't believe a 12 year old kids needs the highest powered electronics just yet. Also, being kids (and I know every kid is different), you'll also have to factor in that the iPod you give to your duaghter is going to get thrown around, roughed up, lost, or even stolen. Best to give her some thing small to begin with and maybe you can give her a better one some where down the road.

a smaller kid might lose a smaller ipod. All the newer ipods are just getting smaller so you should try maybe an MP3 player that is not an ipod. there is a mp3 finder on cuircut city.com. This includes ipods. follow my souurce and that will help you on your journey. the finder is towards the bottom of the page. Try sansa, they are good players.

I think it would depend on your 12 year old. Are they responsible? Would they lose it? Are they active, and will it somehow get broken? I bought my 13 year old an inexpensive Creative Muvo, I think it was 60ish dollars.
When I saw she was responsible with that, we invested in a more expensive mp3 player. (Creative microphoto, bigger hard drive, less expensive) and she really likes that too. Sorry if this doesn't really answer your question, it's just been my experience.
