That's a lot of work for a senior. If it is a wall to wall carpet I would call a carpet cleaning establishment...they send out coupons, use them.
For area rugs I vacuum mine good, both sides and take them out on the driveway and use "Spray and Wash"s on spots then use a bucket with "Woolite" and long handle brush and scrub them down both sides, rinse with a hose and hang them over the rail fence on a warm sunny day to dry...one at a time.

Rent a good carpet steamer from a place (some grocery stores rent them) or hire a chem dry to come and clean and remove stains from the carpet.

2, hire a shampo cleaner, (only if you have other places to do)
3, hire someone to do it they advertise i local papers cheap deals on carpet cleaning.

If its a throw rug, just take it to your local laundrymat and throw it in one of their large washers. Most laundrymats will even do it for you for a small fee. Most rugs can be hung dry or dried in a dryer on low heat
