It depends on the class. If the class has a lab and the information that comes from that reflects the labs results then you should be there.
On the other hand you are the one paying for the class what does the Prof. care whether you are there or not.
My husband was a Prof. at a major university and he did mark you down for not being there because he figured you took the class for a reason and how are you going to learn if you are not there for lecture especailly if it a class that is based on lecture.
good luck: you can argue both ways and loose

The point of school is to educate. The only tangible way to prove one has learned any course material is an exam. If they pass the exam, they pass the class. Students pay too high a tuition to fail due to some arbitrary rule. If they've proved they've learned what they are required to learn, they pass the class.

Yes, attending classes and being part of class discussions is an important part of university learning and therefore those not willing to participate should fail. If the absenses were due to ill health or some other pertainent reason then I guess no.

It's your own choice to go to classes or not, but college used to be this thing where actually wanted to learn and intellectuals would go to broader their areas of study.
Now people just go for jobs, money, to get by, so I don't think it's a horrible idea to have the policy be failure if you miss a lot of classes.

No, as long as they have the knowledge they should have, they should pass the exams. There are lessons to explain things to people, but if the students already get it, there's no use in coming to class.
