HI, My grandma used to tell me that they used old pieces of material torn up, which they would wash out and re-use. Sounds a bit gross, but I think thats where the nickname for having your 'rags' came from (another word sometimes used for 'having your period').

It didn't get the name 'rag' for nothing.
They used cloth, any kind of absorbent material, for that time of the month.
And I can't believe that a woman would go 'commando' at that time of the month and bleed all over herself. Boo to the one that suggested it.

I think the native Americans used to just throw them into a menstral hut for a week and let them bleed on themselves.
