The show Mythbusters tested that theory. According to their findings, the myth is busted. Toast lands about even either way. The most likely reason it often lands butter down has to do with time for rotation and distance travelled, as well as force on the bread when dropped to the floor.

Saint Runs with Scissors is correct as the show Mythbusters tested that theory. According to their findings, the myth is busted and toast lands about even either way. It just when it lands butter down we remember that the most as winds us up more when in lands butter up... we just pick it up

In answer to the question "What happens if you tie buttered toast to a cats back, butter side up, and then dropped the cat", this is actually the basis of an anti-gravity machine.
If you need more power, butter a cut loaf of French bread and strap it to a lion.

Mythbusters - Myth BUSTED!

As stated above by a few people, this theory was tested by Mythbusters, and toast was no more likely to land butter side down, than it was butter side up.

There is a scientic reason & it goes something like this...
the average height of a table/worksurface means that when the toast falls, it's speed/height/size means it turns just the right amount of times before it hits the ground, which happens to mean it's buttered side down.
I saw it on a tv prog a while ago.
Sorry for the lack of scientific jargon lol

It doesn't usually land butter side down, scientists have done tests and it landed butter side up as often as it did butter side down.

There is a little known fact about butter and floor wax. They are both magnetic materials. So when you drop buttered bread in the kitchen it's a simple law of magnetic attraction. When you drop it anywhere else it's like tossing a coin; you have a 50/50 chance.

ahha i can help you avoid this scientifically....

when you butter the bread, if you spread it on hard and compress the bread a little whilst doing so (so your crusts stand higher) the weight distribution changes so that it will more often than not land butter side up...

and if it doesn't the buttered side will not touch the floor either....

It's to do with weight.
Unbuttered toast will fall any which way,but as soon as you put something on it,gravity will flip it over,as the buttered side is heavier.
