You really need to read up on everything there is to know about the kind of turtle you are getting. It can be alot of work and you really need to be ready for the long haul, most turtles can live for over 30 years with the proper care. I do agree with the fact that to properly care for your new turtle you will need about $250, because unlike what they sale at the pet store (those little plastic containers with the palm tree) you need to have a tank that is large enough to house your new pet and then of course all the rest of the items that you will learn about when you read up on your specific type. PLEASE take the time to learn about them before you buy, way too many turtles die just because ppl think that they can just put them in a bowl with water.

*20 gallon tank(at least)
*water filter(if it's a water turtle)
*tank lid
*uva/uvb light
*heating lamp
*net to scoop out crap(if it's a water turtle)
*turtle food little pellets or worms sometimes fish, lettuce
*something to bask on
*substrate(fake dirt if it's a land turtle)
*siphon(for water turtles to do water changes)
You can get all that for like $100 - $175. If you take your time shopping. ebay can be even more effective.
You may also want to look at this for a tank set up idea http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Articles/firstturtleenclosure.htm
Really turtles are not THAT expensive. Sometimes big pet stores will sell packs with most of the stuff needed for cheap. Ebay is really good too. I got all my stuff by stores though.

Turtles DO cost alot when you first get one. Dont buy a smaller tank then upgrade later, why waste the money. It's best to start out with a 55 gallon.
UVB/UVA light (most important) about $15
turtle dcok ( go for the bigger one ) $20
Heat lamp ( regular house bulb is fine )
Heater $15-$20
Filter Fluval works best( they are sumergable) $30-$40
turtle pellets $3
Romain lettuce
Feeder guppies or rosies
Python siphon $40 (hooks up to your sink and all for easy cleaning)
All together we spent about $300 for our 3 turtles

Hi, please call, or better yet,go to your local library. There are many many reference books about turtles. How to set up an aquarium, Environment and care, Diet and feeding,What to do if your turtle is sick, how to tell what kind of turtle you have. Different kinds have different ways to care for them. I can tell you ,to just get started, will run about $250.00. And that's just the basics. You need an aquarium, a light for it,(turtles HAVE to Have at least eight hours of day light, or ultavioiet light) you'll need a heater, some filters, a timer switch,a pump, and on and on. You can't do without any of these things. You have to have them, unless of course you don't expect the turtle to live very long. Than that turns into animal cruelity. Be sure you learn everything there is about turtles before you get one ok? They will be depending on you for everything, they wont be able to take care of theirselves. Good luck, please make your turtles happy ok?
