yeah the official number we are given is more around 3000 and it includes both Iraq and Afghanistan. But be careful because sometimes the Pentagon will play with numbers. I'm not sure if that number includes marines and other none army personnel. Also I know America hires mercenaries and they probably aren't included in that number.
