1. Set up the tank and have everything running. Make sure you understand 'Cycling' a tank and how to introduce the fish safely, there's lots of information on it on the web.
1. Do some research to get an idea of what different kinds of fish need (size of tank, setup, tankmates) and make a basic plan so that you're not relying completely on impulse.
2. Find a decent, reputable store - this can often be the mom and pop store you might pass by without noticing. Make sure they have nice clean tanks throughout. WalMart is anything but quality and support slave labour too.
3. Pay the cashier, take home your fish. Float the bag to adjust the temperature of the water in the bag to match the tank. Introduce the fish, but not the fish store water.

Set up the aquarium in advance. 1 week of running with no fish for every 10 gallons of water. Add fish in small numbers (1 or 2) slowly until you reach the max. The max is 1 inch of length (adult full grown) per gallon of water... 10 gallons, 10 inches of fish. Make sure the fish you get are good community dwellers (if it's a community tank you are setting up) and the best source for co-habitation comfort in fish is a pet store. Walmart is not the best bet for fish advice. Just remember that the pet department Walmart guy will be in automotive next week and came from ladies shoes last week.
