It amuses and entrtains the public -- as it has from the beginning of time -- and helps cynical politicians to get elected. Other than that it doesn't accomplish much in this age of "life means life" and "life in prison without possibility of parole".

And it costs the state far more than life imprisonment to accomplish. Appeals all the way to the Supreme Court, etc. are expensive. Capital trials have come near to bankrupting some small counties, which pay for trials but not for prisons.

If you are from the UK, forget it. Protocol 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, part of UK law under the Human Rights Act 1989, forbids the death penalty "under all circumstances".

If an extremely vicious crime has been committed and the criminal has had a life sentence handed down, I am all in favour of the death penalty. Sadly, far too many old befuddled and bewigged Judges in their dotage hand down 'slap on the wrist' sentences many of which punishments don't fit the crime. There are many crimes I would like to see have the death penalty - murderers, rapists, paedophiles, muggers being amongst those who deserve such death penalties.Sadly,in this country,we spend so much time fawning over all criminals that the victims get forgotten. In the past we used to punish the criminal and reward the victim. Now,under Blair,we punish the victim and reward the criminal.Bring back the death penalty for those who deserve it.Alan L.

Ignore those who say it doesn't work - statistically, the death penalty is 100% effective. Not a single person in history who has been executed has EVER offended again.

However, this question keeps getting asked on Answers in one form or another, and it matters not one iota what people in the UK think about the death penalty. The right to life is enshrined in the Human Rights Act and the death penalty is prohibited in the EU, so there is no chance whatsoever of it being reintroduced.

Finally, I can think of nothing that Donnel Carty and Delano Brown, who murdered City lawyer Tom ap Rhys Pryce, deserve more than to be executed. If you are under the misguided impression that there is some hope for victims of crime to ever be protected by the law and to get justice in this country I am afraid that you will continually be sadly disappointed.

No I do not. The death penalty is murder. Those that argue that it is judicial and thus cannot be classed as murder are, in my view, wrong. It is still the taking of a life by another human being.
The death penalty should be removed from all judicial systems in every country in the world.
The United Kingdom will never reinstate the death penalty so long as it is a member of the European Union. It is in the terms of membership to the EU that it is forbidden for a state to issue the death penalty for any crime.

if death is punishment for crime then we are all criminals because we are all going to die. Some believe there is reward in being dead. The death penalty is only useful in making more space in the prisons, but it doesn't stop heinous acts from happening. The nearest i have come to death is being unconcious and it is a lot less frightening than being concious. So maybe the death penalty is more of a let off for the perpetrator.

Agree on... I'm not sure what you mean? But if you mean is the death penalty an effective way of dealing with murder, then of course it is not! Look at the USA: the only democracy to employ the death penalty, and also the one with by far the highest murder rate!

That apart, to show your repugnance for killing people by killing more people is more than a little illogical!

I want to say I don't, but I have never been put in the situation where someone I love has been murdered. For now I am against the death penalty, because I think society can be bigger than that, an eye for an eye is the way barbarians think. We are better than this I think, but I don't know

Yes in cases of child rape, peados and pre meditated murder plus your basic sychopath the death penalty should be used. Saves the tax payer a fortune. The odd mistake will be made but this is only to be expected!!!

FRAGINAL-PINOY AKO said "Death penalty is valid because it deters the commission of crimes".

I would say it might be valid IF it deterred the commission of crime.

But since countries that have the death penalty have no less crime than those that do not, my answer is resolutely NO!

I think with the proper legal action being taken yes. There are some people on this earth who simply shouldn't be. Most defiantly it should be left for the most heinous crimes, but as for me I think people who continuously commit sexual crimes should have their private parts cut off. In a way I think in a way one person shouldn't decide if another should live, but in the majority of cases that is what the person in question has done themselves.
