I am recently single... so I am becoming "miss fix-it", so to speak around my house. There was a bad storm a while ago that knocked down the tree in the front yard. Since then, the sprinklers have spewed all over the front yard whenever the water to the house is turned on... I have to keep the water to the house off or else it floods the front yard, and the neighbors yard. Is there a way to cut off the water supply to the sprinklers, and still be able to have water in the house, seeing as I don't use the sprinklers anyway??(rock landscaping)

I've looked all over the house -- there's no box controlling the sprinkler system. I did not have the sprinkler system installed. It was already installed when I moved in, and I know nothing about it... I know that to turn on the sprinklers I had to turn a black knob. And then when I wanted to turn them off, just turn it back the other way. But when the tree fell and ripped the lines, it blew the knob off of the pipe and now water comes out of the knob, as well as sprays all over the yard. The lever to turn the water off and on to the house is connected to the same pipe as the sprinklers... I don't know of another lever to turn off JUST the water outside??? helppppp!

On the outside of the house, there should be a place where the sprinkler system attaches, usually with a grey box. You should be able to turn them off there. Also the company that installed them should do that for you for free. Their name should be on the box as well. Then they can diagnose the problem with your system, also for free.. If all else fails, inside the house, where the water pipe goes to your outside faucet, there is a shut off valve either in the form of a round handle or a lever. You can turn the outside water off there.

The answer is in your comments about where the "Black" knob was/is located that you used to be able to turn the sprinklers off and on. Dig the area around that location and find the pipe.......you may have to turn on just a slight flow to the house to locate the spot where the valve is. Next either cut off a piece of the pipe or measure both the inside diameter and the outside diameter. Go to the local hardware or home store and ask for a cap or plug to close the pipe with. If the pipe is PVC this should be a very simple and inexpensive fix.

Good Luck..

There should be a seperate valve by your water meter where they hooked in the sprinkler system. It is probably underground, inside a box. There should also be a vacuum breaker on the sprinkler line that has to come above ground. There should be a cut-off valve on it too. Finally, if you can't find either of these, call a local sprinkler company to come out and shut it off for you. They should be able to find the valve. Make sure they show you where it is so next time you can do it yourself.

You may need to dig to find the line and then it may have a valve you can turn off. It sounds like you have a well and a pump,if so,then look at the pipes coming from the pump and figure out whitch line goes to the sprinkler and it should have a vavle that you can turn off. If all else fails, you may need to call a plumber or ask landscapers, because they install sprinkler systems. I put my own system in and can try to help you more if you need it. Feel free to contact me.

you have already found where to fix the problem, that's where the black handle was that you used to use to turn them on and off. now you have a couple of options. the first thing you need to do is to remove the broken valve. wether your pipe at this point is plastic or metal, the easiest way is to cut the pipe on both sides of the valve. now you need to decide if you would like to cap off the pipe and not use the system again or plan for the possibillity of fixing the system in the future. if you want to cap it off, and it's metal pipe, you need to dig back toward the house to the next connection and unscrew it taking care to hold on to the fitting that is staying so that you do not twist or break this fitting. now wether it's metal or plastic, take your parts with you to your hardware store and ask for assistance and they'll help get you the right parts to cap or plug the line.
if you would like to replace the valve so that it would be easier in the future to bring this system back into working order, again if it's metal pipe you do the same as above toward the house. than you also dig away from the to the next fitting and unscrew the pipe. now go to hardware. if it's plastic pipe, just take the broken valve in with you and your hardware should be able to help you. if it was me, i'd replace the valve because you never know for sure what the future brings, and it's already going to be tore apart. so for just a little more work now, it could save you a lot of time later not to mention digging your yard up again. good luck and if you need any other info, just e-mail me. i used to do sprinkler repairs at a large apartment complex. thanks, mark

I'll help you honey!

Hey, I think the tree had roots in the area where the water main goes from the curb toward your house. Try digging with a shovel where you find really wet spots in the yard. You'll find a blasting hole in the water main, and you can get a plumber out to fix it.

A repair coupling for the water main is about $85.00, and the call will be around $200- if YOU find the leak, and dig it up.

Well if you're fixed on fixing it your self I don't know what to tell you other than find where the pipe is connected and disconnect the pipe to the sprinklers. But otherwise you could call a plumber they should be able to fix it relatively fast.

If you cannot find a timer or a shut off valve you might have to get a landscaper or plumber to come out to fix the problem.

You need to find where the sprinklers hook to your house system and disconnect them.

It may be as easy as finding a timer hooked to one of your outside spigots.

By the way, how do you pronounce your name?
