I love anwsers like the joker above me wrote.. This question doesn't ask about who's the better human being....It asks about who's the best linebacker...For my money it's Lawrence Taylor!! I don't care if he did drugs, sent a hooker to a guys room or slaughtered a family during the week...On Sunday he was an animal on the field!! And you can say the same thing about Ray Lewis!! He not the best....But he's top 10 all time for sure!!

Linebackers have had the greatest impact with regard to changing the game of pro football. Their size, speed and quickness are incredible. Lawrence Taylor set the standard by which today's linebackers are judged. He did it all. So, Ray Lewis is a great linebacker but he doesn't compare to LT or several others that have played the game.
Pound for pound the toughest linebacker in my book was Jack Lambert. He weighed in at 215 lbs. but hit you like a ton of bricks and played both run and pass extremely well but he could not rush the quarterback like LT. LT was a wrecking ball to the opposing team's offense.

Lewis is good. So was Lambert, Singletary, Butkis, Nitsche. Hard to pick a real "best".

And it should be split into 2 groups, OLB and MLB, they perform different tasks (especially 3-4 OL B like Taylor and Thomas)

And to the 2nd answerer, Jack Tatum wasn't a LB, he was a safety, just a really hard-hitting safety.

^ you like jewelry? No, in case you opt to talk approximately jewelry, Ray Lewis gained it with TRENT DILFER. Nuff' stated. Oh, and do not forget approximately that dropped td bypass and neglected FG against the pats interior the AFC chpiomshiop. yet to the asker- No. he's no longer the terrific linebacker ever. Lawrence Taylor is the terrific OLB Ray Is ARGUABLY the terrific MLB. do no longer forget approximately Butkus, Lambert, Singletary, Urlacher, etc.

How can one determine who is the best at anything?
In all likelihood, you will never see all individuals that do that particular thing and the ones that you do see won’t have the exact same variables.
What would be the comparative variables?
Ray Lewis is very good at what he does with the supporting cast that he has around him and with the defensive scheme that he plays in but would he be the same, greater or lesser force on the same team with different supporting players or the same or different players in a different defensive scheme? And how does the coaching and training fit into the equation? How about the pay? What kind of effect does his paycheck have on his play? What about his mindset? He has a you can’t kill me, I won’t die attitude about himself that the players around him seem to exhibit as well. Is that because of him or is that their natural mindset as well?
What about his desire to excel? What about the era in history that he is playing? What are the comparative variables to different players of different eras?
I could go on and on with the variables.
Would he be the same, greater or lesser on a different team? And what about the linebackers of the future? Some you will see and most you will not.
Ray Lewis the best linebacker ever?
NO!

He's not even the best linebacker on his team. That would be Adalius Thomas (9 sacks). Ray Lewis is on the decline. The best current linebackers are Thomas, Brian Urlacher, and Shawne Merriman.

He may be on of the best playing today, but to say the best ever? I don't know. I think a defensive team helps make the player. The Ravens overall have some of the best defensive players in the league. I saw some of the others mentioned. I don't think I saw anybody mention Dick Butkus(Bears) or Conrad Dobler(St. Louis Cardinals, yeah before they went to Arizona)

Lot's were better...

Come to think of it, not only were the likes of Mike Singletary, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Lawrence Taylor, better linebackers than ray lewis, but they were also BETTER HUMANS!!!!
Sure, LT had drug problems, but he wasn't a murderer like lewis is.

Pretty big statement there as best ever. He's the best of this generation no doubt, but i've never seen LT or Butkus, etcc. in their prime so i don't know if he's the top LB ever.

LT, Michael Singletary, Thomas, Dick Butkus, and 2 or 3 others are better. Urlachar, Zach Thomas are right there with him.
