indeed it is weird, and schocking
why?
well first of all, firearms are readily available in the U.S., can be bought pretty much by anyone. This is certainly not the case in most other richer nations. So when a teenager gets mad / frustrated (as any teenager should, from time to time), they unfortunately have the option to get hold of a rifle.
secondly, the level of public schools in the U.S. is quite poor. I'm not saying that public schools in the rest of the rich Western world are not decadent - but they're still far better than what can be found in the U.S., to the point that most people who can afford it, put their kids in private schools. As a result, whatever is left in public schools, is (way) below average.
the U.S. has a higher amount of working poor, a (much) higher proportion of teenage pregnancies, all is probably inter-related (working poor parents have no free time to spend on educating children, uneducated children don't know you can get pregnant by having unprotected sex, nor do they know it is NOT ok to shoot down people because they were nasty to you once).
quite sad because the U.S. has so many good sides

First it is something that is very rare especially when one considers the amount of children in America going to school. Even though one incident is too many. I have to agree with Rich B and Gennine M, but as to danskepj America being a gun culture is not the problem. Switzerland has a culture where everyone on completing school has to join the Army. Every male no exceptions. After they finish their active duty they take their weapons home and stay in the reserves till they are 45. Almost every home in Switzerland has a automatic weapon in the house, the same for Israel. No school shootings there. I'd say the difference is cultural and the society we have created in America. Not the access to guns
Ronnie P- Who cares, If i had my wish military service would be mandatory for all as soon as you graduate. Such as Switzerland does!

Because the US has parents who don't care enough to be involved in their children's life. They don't ask questions or know where their kids are at any given time. Parents are too involved in their own lives, verbally and/or physically abuse them and don't put them first. The kids learn from this and have too much time on their hands so they get into trouble. Kids get their guidance from TV, games, the internet and/or their friends. There are many single parent families where typically the father isn't around for whatever reason and either the mother is working or doesn't care or isn't capable of knowing what her kids are doing. Kids need to know they're special, that they are loved and no matter how angry they get when asked questions it's too bad! Ask and be in the know. Parents need to be all over them so they can guide them in a loving manner. It's just not happening in this country.

Despite what some may say, America is a permissive society. Much of what kids learn these days especially, comes from MTV and FUSE. Both parents are financially required to work. leaving the children with little to no close supervision. And if you read many of the questions and comments made by many of the kids here, even IF they had someone of authority watching over them, they would as soon spit in their face or cuss them out and just go do what they feel like doing. Just an observation, but it looks like parents are either unable to or unwilling to do their jobs as parents. My kids are thankfully all grown now. But I knew where they were and what they were doing when they were not home. Until their 16th birthday, they could count on a visit from me at whatever place they said they would be at. Not saying I always showed up, but they knew as fact that I would make a surprise visit. I paid attention to my kids in spite of 70 hour workweeks, we did things together and I have a great relationship with them now as adults because of this. Any idiot can breed, but you have to get a license to have a pet animal.

America has the worst school system of all industrialized societies! In addition to all the problems named by other answerers, American children are subjected to intolerable boredom for 6 or 7 hours a day! If I hadn't spent 90% of my time in school daydreaming, I wouldn't have survived it either. It wouldn't take any more money being spent now on security cameras, guards, metal detectors, etc, to relax and let teachers really reach out to their students on a personal level and engage their hungry minds and hearts with real, genuine relevance for today's world!

There are several factors... to list a few;
The general population is desynthesized, by VIDEO GAMES, TV, MUSIC, THE NET etc.
The over use of prescription drugs for ADHD and other behavioral problems.
The absence of 1 or both parents, and or, the uninvolved parents
A fixation on celebrity and the media.
..........I could go on, but you get the point.
It's a very good question...I hope it raises awareness.

Other countries just have teens running the streets setting vehicles and busses on fire. Other countries have car bombs, bus bombs, and land mines.
Other countries people walk around with automatic weapons ready to be used and train their children to do the same.

Don't know, I think schools don't take bullying and bad behavior seriously enough. Or ignore kids who may have mental illnesses. If we really knew why it wouldn't be happening so much.
