It's not really that they are aggressive. It is the fact that their position requires a temperament different from that associated with traditional female gender roles. If observed objectively, without taking gender into account, men and women managers will likely behave the same. It is the fact that women have stepped out of their socially constructed role (nurturing and dependent) that makes them seem aggressive.

I think that it may be mostly because it seems out of character for many women (which is out fault), maybe some women over-do it by getting drunk with power acting even worse than a bad male manager and she will be labeled as a bad manager just as her male counter-part but may not get a second chance if she blows it. Its nothing against women but just human nature.

For example, if it was a female caregiver that was hugging and cuddling the children before nap it would generally be OK because we would associate the female caregiver with motherly tendendies though some parents may feel it is excessive. If it were a male caregiver 98 out of 100 people would be alarmed and maybe remove thier child from that class. The male caregiver could be a new father and he sees the kids in a fatherly way many parents would be very uncomfortable because they are not used to seeing a male in a nurturing role so they assume it is more likely he has impure motives. It would seem 'wrong' even though he did nothting wrong. Just as it would seem "wrong" sometimes for a certain manager to be stern when you wouldn't naturally picture them as being aggressive or a discipliarian.

They think they have something to prove.

I worked with several women at this one place...they were all dreading the coming of the day when they were to get a new manager. When I asked why, they said it was because they heard it was going to be a woman. This being many years ago, I was baffled. Then they went to explain that women were always more harsh, less forgiving and more difficult to work for as they were out to prove something. Three guesses as to what they were/are out to prove, and the first two don't count.

Well, you can't generalize and say ALL women managers are aggressive beacues I 'm sure you have'nt met all of the women managers in the world. Lets' say you are talking about just ur experiences, maybe those women feel if they aren't that way, people wnt take them seriously.Maybe those women are aggresive period.

it's called the NMTPAAH factor, the no man to oush arounf at home factor. No seriously it's because due to the fact that in society, still there is this inequity between the sexes, that the females are still competing harder to gain the same level of recognition and so they just seem more picky, but i really like my first answer.

They don't want to look weak because they are female, so they tend to be more aggressive to prove themselves. Must be exhausting.

First off "CURLY" LMBO ! I don't mind a woman boss because, I'm cute, and they always like me, now that I'm done telling you how "Wonderful" i am, I must say that when they are very pushy, it is annoying to men because, it reminds them of their wives or g/f heckling them !
