On 18 April 1968, Rennie's bridge was sold to the American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch of McCulloch Oil for the sum of $2,460,000. It has been claimed that he was under the mistaken impression that he was buying the more impressive Tower Bridge, which is often erroneously thought of as 'London Bridge' by tourists, although McCulloch denied this. The bridge was reconstructed at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and dedicated on October 10, 1971. Not all of the bridge was transported to America, as some was kept behind in lieu of tax duties.

It cost abot £2.5M in those days which is a hell of a lot more today. I am not sure about the exact history but this link has everything. http://www.barryoneoff.co.uk/html/london_bridge.html
Did you know that when the bridge was bought, the byer thought they were getting TOWER Bridge. The famous blue one with the raising roadway. For that sort of oney you would think you would know what you were bying......lol
Oh and when you watch "Fergie" from the Black Eyed Peas doing her song "London Bridge" it is actually Tower Bridge in the Background. I dont think anybody has told her that London Bridge is in America. And after she came all this way to do her single and it was only round the corner......lol
It is also where the nursery rhyme "London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down....etc etc" It comes from when the bridge was de-constructed to ship it too America.

London bridge is still in London - when the previous one was sold, a new one was built in its place!
The nursery rhyme "London bridge is falling down" is far, far older than 1971 - I remember singing it when I was a child in the 50's, and it was old then, maybe 100's of years old.

The London Bridge that was 'falling down' was the medieval bridge which had shops and houses built along its length (picture at quoted source). That had to be pulled down as (a) it became to narrow for road traffic with all the buildings and (b) it was inconvenient for river traffic with many narrow piers sunk into the river to support it.
