Chances are you'd be safe - but the odds of coming to grief are so much higher there than virtually anywhere else in the world - apart from a South American drug capital or two and I believe SA is catching even them up in terms of murder statistics.
If you do decide to go, definitely stay away from cash in transit vans. Shoppers keep getting caught in the crossfire at the moment when these are attacked.

I would suggest you Google crime south africa before you consider going there. It is the murder capital of the World and extremely unsafe. Today another 7 Tourists were attacked and robbed in the "safe" Cape Town so if you value your life give it a big miss.
