I use a nylon scourer to clean mine with warm soapy water and it works really well. Never use a metal one as it scratches.

I used to use this method when I was a teenager.and it works great. Take a newspaper, spread out a page, pour plain table salt, until you have a small pile, then start working your hot iron through it, back and forth until all the stains are removed. nothing to harm your iron, the environment, or you. Sometimes the older generation made do with what they had. Then pick up paper, salt and throw away.

I use a Vilene Oven Stick. It really works! Take care because as soon as you apply to warm iron it will of course start melting and running down your iron. [A small amount marked my ironing board once!] Make sure you are doing it in a suitable environment. It also stinks so open windows ready!

Don't scratch the surface with any thing too abrasive or you will get more black stuff sticking to it. Heat it up and then rub with scrunched up cotton tea towel usually gets it off.

Warm the iron, then gently use a sponge with scouring pad to rub it of.next time you use your iron, turn the temperature down a bit and it will stop it from happening.
