This is our first time to go to London. I'll be working at heathrow airport and i hope to find a home at Hayes. The company offered me 27k per annum, do you think it's enough to live with & also save some for the future? Also, which is better, to accept a company car or a car allowance (3k per annum)? We really need all the advice we can get, especially from those who already live in London. Thanks in advance!

I was born and have been living in Central London all my life. Accommodation is expensive where I live, a nice flat costs around £1000/month; a house in Central London will cost 500k!.

If you are staying in Central London, it's best to live in a flat, but if you will be living out of the centre, in the suburbs, accommodation will be cheaper. Trust me, living in Central London will drain you if you spend too extravagantly.

27k/annum is enough, more than what most people earn. You will survive. But to be honest, life is hard nowadays, I know people who live in Central London who are having problems with money, etc...Use your money wisely.

I'm going to assume you are not a Briton. If you are, then this probably won't help you (except the car part).

27k isn't a lot in London, but you can survive well enough and have a really fun time if you're young and energetic and you like pubs.

If you like to travel, London is the best place to start. You can take weekend trips around Europe dirt cheap.

There are also social groups of every sort. For example, If you're American, you will find a fun circle of American friends no problem. That'll get you started until you meet some Britons. The social group will help you adjust to the small differences in culture which are quite necessary to understand before you'll be able to connect with the Britons. I suggest you pose your next question as "Where do the people from x country hang out in London?"

27k GBP in London will get you the same lifestyle as 27k USD in New York. Everything costs double.

Of course, if your husband also works, you'll be doing pretty well, but not VERY well.

Definitely don't take the car. Public transportation is very good and cars cost huge dollars for gas, parking and extras.

Look for properties to rent/buy in Uxbridge, slough, Reading. All have easy access to Heathrow down the M4 motorway. Properties in Hayes are very expensive.
They will tax you on a company car so you might wanna check out car allowance and weigh the two up.

yes, you will survive. Everything you need isn't exactly far away.. I live in Uxbridge, not so far from Hayes. It depends what part of Hayes your going to live too I guess.. But Hayes is an ok area.. The town isn't so nice.. Uxbridge is a good place for shopping etc.. So you may see me around town and places.. Creepy.. lol. Hope you have fun.. Take care..

You will struggle to adapt but in the long run it will be worth it.
Get out & about & socialise & you will eventually fit in. I worked in London years ago & hated it but what the hell. Different horses for different courses. Come up to Scotland if you feel unwanted down there. We don't bite!
