I said most, not all!
Geez I am not trying to stereotype gay people its just that in my experience of gay people that ive seen in the media, in life etc, gay people speak with a distinctive voice. Thats probably because you cant tell the other gay people are gay. I apologise for any offence caused. I just wanted to know if there was any scientific reason for SOME gay people having that type of voice.

I think everyone woke up cranky this morning. That sounded like an honest question if maybe misinformed, not mean spirited.

It is a stereotype that popular media perpetuates. People are trained to recognize the lisping effeminate voice as a gay voice, even if most gay people don't speak that way. When we hear it in real life, sure enoguh a gay guy is connected with it most of the time. Sometimes stereotypes do apply to actual people, but they are often the people that stand out from the crowd.

Chances are the only people you recognize as gay are those that have some of those stereotyped traits. Just realize those are just the ones you notice, most gay men do not have the "voice" and a few that do have the "voice" might actually be straight.

Most is a generalization, since there are a lot of "straight-acting gays." They aren't that prominant or noticable since they don't stress the fact that they are gay. Prominant gay guys are just that: prominant, so you see them more often, and it's easy to assume that gay men talk this way. These prominant men talk in the "gay voice" because they want to, through any way possible, convey that they are gay. The media has been consistantly portraying gay men as speaking in a high, effeminate voice. So, like anyone else, gay men copy what they see on TV. Straight men do the same thing with the "dude" voice.

I've heard some rubbish in my time but this comes quite near the top of the list ! You obviously only know a few "camp" ones and like too many people, chuck them all into the same pot. I suggest you take a CAREFUL look at all of those men you automatically think as being straight and perhaps you'd find out that some of them aren't quite what they seem. They manage to fool people like you by just behaving like, what is in your eyes, normally, and probably if you didn't carry this attitude of "most..." around with you may cause you to rethink your ways. Some of my best friends are gay, but because they don't let people like you know that they are, you just wouldn't have a clue about them, and that's just the way they want it. The likes of you and your comments they can do without, and I can assure you that any gay men reading your question on here will 'mark your card' as being one of the stupid brigade and in future will give you grief in the form of some 'wonderful' answers......

NOT the ones I know. VEry few of them sound any different from anyone else. What does a 'distinctive gay voice' sound like?

I think you might hear what you call a 'distinctive gay voice' and then assume that those guys are gay. (Rightlyor wrongly). The guys who do not sound gay (according to your hearing) and those you do not know, you assume to be straight. MOST gays however sound like most straights and bis, so UNLESS you know the sexuality of EVERYONE you meet, then you will not know whether they are gay or not by lisetning to their voices.

Most of them don't. However, the media portrays them like that.

Having said that, SOME of them (NOT ALL!) who have that voice just put it on IMO (Obviously, however, there are some who do geniunely sound like that, but anyway). I know a few gay guys and there is one who does indeed have that voice (He seems to be a 'prominant'), but all the others I know don'tand one of them acts as straight as you get.

I don't know whether it's just me or not, but nobody seems to comment on vocal stereotypes for female homosexuals.

Only the effeminate ones have that 'gay' voice you're talking about. Some gay men sound like Barry White :)

Go to a gay leather bar, missy ( as if you'd be able to withstand the smoke and smell of bourbon!). You'll hear really gruff, husky, deep tones from gay men who look like men. I know more gay men that sound like Mark Walhberg than Pee-Wee Herman (who is straight, by the way)

Honest. You need to get out more and stop making a fool of yourself. You are a sheltered little girl with no idea. I'm trying to be polite.

For the same reasons that all women are weak, all muslims are terrorists, and all black people are criminals: because people actually believe bullshit like that. Most gay men I have known have voices just like their heterosexual counterparts.

Stereotyping like this is not helpfull to anyone in society.

Here is the 411 doll. I wouldn't even put most into your little question. You should really put a percentage .... should be about 5-10%.

Why do most straight people sound like they have a mouth full of s.hit and are trying to talk around it ?

Not all of them do. I have a mate who is a builder and has never been with a woman and sounds 'normal' and another who you would swear bats for the other side and is as straight as they come.

You can't judge a book by its cover.
