The rumor is there was a convention of satanists or something like that in 1969 at a certain California hotel. I have no idea if that is true or not.

michinoku2001 is correct, that's been the rumour - but I think it's actually a wine reference (as in "Wines and Spirits). The wine mentioned in the line preceeding it.
So he called up to the captain and was asking for "his" wine... I guess one that's known to be a favourite of his. The song was written (or, at least released) in the late 70s. Putting it all together, he asked for his wine, the captain responds saying they've been out for years.

I was told the members were high when they wrote it. I love the song because it seems to symbolize getting lost or trapped. I told my friend that if marijuana makes you feel like the song, It's best to never touch the stuff.
