It is a question of politicfs versus geography - the British Isles is a term of geography, and its a matter of fact that the Republic of Ireland - whilst being a seperate political entity - is gographically and physically part of the same landmass - and that landmass is known as The British Isles.

Politiclaly, however, it is certainly not a part of the United Kingdom (england, wales, scotland, northern ireland).

There are lots of people on this site who live all around the world, and its not necessarily fair to assume that they understand the differences - I there are a fair few Brits who dont know which parts of the Balkans are independent/not......

It is actually The British Isles, which contains England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland (Northern Ireland).

The Republic of Ireland whilst a country in itself it is attached to Northern Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland IS part of the British Isles.
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom (but the Republic isn't).
Britain is comprised of England, Scotland and Wales (but NOT Northern Ireland or The Republic of Ireland)

People in the states don't really know the situation, they think it's all one country but then they might hear someone say something about the uk and it gets them all confused. They don't realise that there's two separate things going on over here.
I used to live in the states, and i didn't even get it straight til i was movin here.
We are not taught much about anyone else but the U.S. It's really sad, but true.
The education you get about the rest of the world is crammed into two classes called sociology and geography and it's not required to take those classes , so most people stay ignorant not by choice but just because they are not informed.

I don't. I see the Rep. of Ireland as a seperate Country. Yes, you guys are similar in that you speak English and Drive on the Left (Hurrah!) but you guys are a seperate Nation not associated with Great Britain.

I dont know but many people like to call britain ENGLAND which annoys the hell out of me because although Scotland isnt a totally Independant country (like ROI) it is not England.

Yeah and why, in things like Test the nation or the Eurovision Song contest does Scotland get bunged into the one big group while england gets split up into different areas.... gnarr

People from outside the British Isles tend not to understand these things. Britain is so often referred to as England, well last time I chaecked the Welsh weren't English, far from it!
