Hi there, I have a desktop 2.8Ghz P4, 1Gb RAM running WinXP pro SP2. I was working on my pc yesterday, shut it down fine - when I booted this morning it did not recognise ANY usb ports! Luckily I had ps2 converters so I changed my usb keyboard and mouse to PS2, and they worked fine - but all other peripherals are dead. My PC has a ton of usb ports...

I have 4 at the front of my case via a PCI card attachment.
4 connecting directly to motherboard at the back.

None of these work...can anyone offer advice?

Before you all say it, I have gone and checked device manager, and there are no yellow exclamation marks. I am contemplating deleting all the usb devices from there and letting windows refind them on reboot? Any better ideas?

I am concerned it is a motherboard problem...because why would all the USB ports just suddenly stop functioning? It's a bit bizarre. I recently reinstalled WinXP SP2 about 6 months ago.

I had this same problem, I had to reinstall some drivers.

Go to control panel, system. Device Manager. You may notice some have !!! signs next to them. Try reinstalling them.

If not maybe there is static. Try turning your system off fully. Turn off the mains switch but keep it plugged in so it's earthed. Hold your power button on the pc for 3 mins roughly.

Other than that maybe you are using too many usb devices. I've heard there have been problems with sp2 but if you have had it on for 6 months I would find that strange.

Not sure other than that... I would try reinstalling the usb devices anyhow just for a test.

Good Luck

Sounds like you shorted out your built in USB ports. It SOMETIMES happens when you don't SAFELY REMOVE USB DEVICES when you remove the USB device, or when you insert a USB device askew.

The good news is your board has backup USB inside. You just have to buy new USB ports and attach them directly to the motherboard

The best you can do is to take your computer to the manufacturer's Support center along with all the devices you are using with your Laptop. They can better tell you if there is any Hardware compatibility conflict or if there is any software problem. From your explanations it looks a bit complex problem but I am sure the manufacturer's Technician can help you.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
