What operating system aree you using? if you are using 98, you may need a driver install disk, for which you need to install before it will run. on Xp, it should find the usb device automatically, otherwise you need a new driver. getting service pack 2 is advisable, which is downloadable for free from the microsoft website (something like http://www.microsoft.com/) if it still doesnt work, there may be a hardware problem.

well it might because of you are using
another USB port for use such as
dial-up modem...or some other stuff
try disconnect them and test with thumb drive
should be ok then, if still problem occurs you have to scan
for new hardware..go to my computer-right click-properties-
choose hardware and scan.
