How did butterflies get in your stomach? Well, those really aren't butterflies in there. "Butterflies in the stomach" is a way of describing those nervous, fluttery feelings you might get before a test or an important game. An imaginative writer created the phrase to describe the feeling, and people have been using it ever since.
These tummy flutters are normal and happen to many people - even grown-ups. Some people believe having a few butterflies might even help you perform better by keeping you on your toes.
You may of noticed that whenever you have butterflies in your stomach you're feeling nervous or excited. When you are nervous or excited organs just above your kidneys release a chemical messenger into your blood called adrenalin.
Humans have adrenalin because it helps protect ourselves from danger, back in ancient history cavemen would not be feeling nervous because they had a big exam, they would be feeling nervous because they thought something was going to eat them. The adrenalin helped them run away from or fight the thing they thought would eat them. When we have to run quickly or fight we need lots of blood to go to our muscles and other important organs, so the adrenalin sends most of the blood there and takes it away from the unimportant parts of the body, like your stomach. So when you get butterflies in the stomach, the funny feeling is caused by the blood going away from your stomach to your muscles.

Like the other friends have said above , it means that you are nervous and you have a funny feeling . The only thing that I would add is that when we say "butterflies " we are possibly refering to a happier or exciting event to unfold. . Like the imminent acceptance of a marriage proposal, the awaiting of an exam. result or the expectation of a lottery number.
It does not include nervesnous relating to fear , anxiety etc. Or ealse whoever who coined this phrase would not have used "butterflies " but , may be, worms!

If you desire a particular result and it is both uncertain as of now and would soon be revealed, you get butterflies in the stomach. It is anxiety caused by the current uncertainty which is soon going to unfold so that you would know if you would get your desired result or not. I am not sure if it is exactly the same as nervousness in general.

scared of the talks with the boss in the morning
dying not to see mother about my adventure
that feeling you get when your girlfriend is ...
and whenever it's time to face up to a crime
my tummy feels like mice running all over
enduring some soft things flying inside my chest
tickling my insides before losing my breakfast ...
Some nervous feelings we describe like a jest
How would butterflies feel flying inside YOUR tummy?
