Well, you could do that. Another way to get a Fire Stone is to play in that Pokemon Arena thing (Forget what its called) just North (?) of Goldenrod and get enough points to buy one in the points shop thing.

In order to get the fire stone, you'll have to head to Kanto and see Bill. Have a vulpix or Growlithe in your party and he'll give you one as a reward. However, you'll need to show him a Pichu and get a thunderstone first.

it's true that there is a guy north of the city with the water gym that will give you a firestone if you show him a certain pokemon...

DON'T LISTEN TO THESE PPL!!!!... I did and it ruin my playthrough. All stones are at Mahogany Town at Grandma's shop (pokemart). She sells rare items. I don't know if it varies day to day but its available after you beat all 8 gym leaders so you can have your final evolution b4 you hit the elite four.
