Yes! Whatever you do, do not put the patch on and then later decide that you are going to take even one puff off of a cigarette! It can be very dangerous! My mom and an old college professor of mine did that and both of them got very sick. It can cause a heart attack even if you have never had one before. The patch in itself is fine, but not when you try to smoke with it.

Ive used patches without success in the past. They still provide your body with nicotine, which is the one thing your trying to quit!

I ended up using only 2 things to quit successfully (been smoke free for over a year).

A book: The ONLY way to quit smoking PERMANENTLY by Allen Carr...i didnt even read it all....only the sections that applied to me.

A positive attitude.

Honestly, ive never endorsed a book before. Give it a go. It puts you in a frame of mind and provides logic to your cravings and desires and isnt a cliche like some other methods and 'courses' i've tried. Good luck.

Look in the mirror and see how bad and dull your skin is becoming, wrinkles forming, spots appearing, teeth becoming brown at the back and yellow at the front, awful ashtray breath, friends turning away when you talk because your breath smells, breathing difficult after walking upstairs. That should stop you in your tracks. When you feel like a smoke, drink a glass of water. Do not start eating to compensate. If you do manage to stop, within a few short weeks, you will feel and certainly look like a whole new woman. All you need is will power. Good luck.

Until May this year I smoked 40-50 a day for MANY years. I joined a local support group (NHS-UK) where I got NRT on prescription and chose Inhalator which worked well for me. 6 weekly meetings with support Group and about 8 weeks before I stopped using Inhalator altogether,. Also register with www.quitnet.com for additional free help. Now, 184 days later, I've saved £1930 and NOT smoked 7400 fags. After you've quit read Allan Carr's book for additional support. Best of luck,-if I can do it so can you!

I used the gum... apart from getting hiccups sometimes it worked really well. I stopped smoking a year ago! Make sure you keep yourself busy for the first few weeks.. you will need to replace the action of smoking to break the cycle. Do things differently for example if you used to light up after eating go and do the washing up things like that. Good luck!!! XXXX

I tried several times with the patches and failed - there's just nothing to look forward to and no buzz. The gum (4mg Nicotinell) worked for me. If you can get through three weeks or so, after a while, you start to prefer it to fags. You can use it at work, on transport, in the bath, in bed - much more convenient. Stick with it - every time you feel tempted to have a ***, promise yourself you'll have piece of gum first and then think again whether you really need one. It works.

I'd recommend the Allen Carr book as well, it really convinced me that I just don't need to smoke any more - now when I think about a cigarette I just don't want one at all, and wonder why I ever 'enjoyed' them! (I tried stopping with gum a few years ago but started again after a year - patches/gum etc didn't really work for me).

Good luck with whatever method you choose! :-)

Donna I am doing the same am on patches. My patch dosage is not strong enough so I am going on heavier dose. I am finding it hard, especially when drinking alchol. I have fallen off wagon. So am going to try and not drink this weekend.
It does take will power and you must want to do it. Good luck and stay away from pubs/clubs for a bit if you can.

I used the patch , didn't like it very much. Gave me bad dreams at night, had to take it off during the night. I used Zyban to quit. I smoked for 13 years and have now been smoke free for 19 months.
