Sad but true...

The worst part about the death penalty is the length of time it takes for an actual execution. There should be no Appeals if the person is found 100%, without a doubt guilty. People who commit attrocious crimes, against other human, beings deserve to die period. I am all for putting them in a room, handcuffed, with the victims family. Another idea is to turn a stadium into a Gladiator arena and sell it on Pay Per View. The last one one left alive will be the only one that our hard earned tax dollars will have to support. This sounds vicious and inhumane but something needs to be done and giving the bastards a time out ain't working!!

I was doing fine reading the answers until........one person put abortionist on death row. This is exactly why I am against the death penalty - ABORTIONS ARE LEGAL IN THE U S A right now so it concerns me deeply that a person can sentence to death someone who has broken no law. hmmmmmmmmmm

All statistics show that death penalty does nor act as a deterrent to crime. It deters you and I (maybe) but a slap on the wrist may deter us too. Hardened criminals and those that commit crimes of passion will not be deterred because - and here is the biggest rub of all - they do not think they will get caught.

.....and who the hell are we to decide to but someone to death. It sets a violent environment and makes it difficult to teach people another way to deal with issues.

I am a liberal, but I do believe in the death penalty. There are rules to a society, and if you egregiously break the most important one - murder, you do not deserve to be a part of that society. There is no point to life long incarceration for some crimes. I do not see it as a deterrent, but as an end to that particular murderer. The murder will have a much quicker and humane death than their victim(s). I think the FBI statistic is that a killer usually goes through about 8 victims before they are in danger of being caught.

Anyone who has read accounts of people such as Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy should realize this. Even criminals kill such people. I doubt anyone felt too badly about Jeffrey Dahmers end.

Now, there needs to be a fair and competent trial/defense and the rule of law must be obeyed.....but there are crimes that are so heinous that the perpetrator should be erased. People do awful things to women and children. The man who used to host Americas most wanted - his son was abducted, a very small young child. All they found was the boys head. Sadly this is not the worst story. And it is not unique to America either. Violence towards women and children is growing worldwide.

We are, after all, animals. All packs have their rules, and it is, after all, easy to avoid killing. One doesn't hunt torture or kill another human being by accident. You can close your eyes to the horror, but it's still there.

And an abortion is a medical procedure that one may have strong belifes on, but doesn't belong in this conversation. We are talking about convicted criminals, and abortion is currently legal in the US.

Every time a poor child is murdered by some beast, I am for the death penalty. Then I see reports of innocent people held for years on death row, I get doubts. This is such a difficult problem and I cannot make up my mind.

I am a bit torn, but I think I'd rather have someone get life in prison than be sentenced to death. I know there are some really bad crimes out there, but wouldn't that be stooping to their level to get revenge? Have you heard of "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"? I think my opinion is probably too idealistic and it will probably change once I get to college, but that's what I feel about it right now.

It is a question that has been going on for years and years and earned me a low grade in Theology when I was still in college. Why? Because I am for it, even if we have to be selective about it.A mad dog who bites indiscriminately and poses a danger is eliminated so why can't we eliminate a criminally insane person who not only poses a danger to society but may increase his dangerous breed? Pro Life activists may say it is no deterrent, but at least when we execute a dangerous criminal we are aware that at least one bad element of society has been eliminated.

Let us be selective about it.The criminally insane, the drug pushers and suppliers, abortionists, rapists, white slavers and the like, they all deserve the gas chamber, or injection needle, firing squad, whatever. But let us eliminate them.

It is natural justice.
When some commits a crime
he upsets the natural equilibrium.
To restore this upset equilibrium
the criminal must be punished.
We cannot wait for God to mete out this punishment.
The laws of the state and the independent judiciary should do it.

Death penalty must be imposed because it will deter the occurrence of crimes.

stop it. it's unrightful a state of right should "kill" one of its citizens.
killing = unrightful, so a state mustn't kill even if it the worst criminal it's confronted with.
think of europe, there death penalty has been abolished, and there are NOT more murderers or heavy criminals than in the US.
have you seen The Life of David Gale?

Can't do the time, don't do the crime. Due to the nature of the crime, some people do not deserve to live. Terrorists immediately comes to mind.
