I own a real estate company and i would like to have all my listings stored in a database. I need to add/edit/delete entries. I have to be able to view listings in ascending and decending order as well as peform searches. I also need to have employees able to log in as well. I have about 20 employees and expect to have around 500 real estate listings. I received one quote for 4,000. Is this too much?

I am a web designer as well. Pretty much the same price here as well, $2000-3000. Your designer having a good portfolio is a MUST. Your site will look as good or bad as all the rest he / she / the company has designed. Assume an average of all the sites. Another variable I charge for in server-scripted sites is hosting. I do not host websites, only design, but with the right host the scripting is easy, and the wrong host scripting is impossible. ASP vs PHP vs Perl vs SQL/MySQL is all a matter of opinion among designers. The costs are pretty similar. I would check into SQL for database, as most database software can edit SQL databases similar to the way MS Access modifies its databases.

4,000 could be an appropriate quote as long as you are very VERY impressed with their portfolio, and they better have a portfolio. I would say somewhere in the 2,000 to 3,000 range is appropriate for an attractive, user friendly, and functional site to your specifications. If you are at all interested, I am a web developer and I built the site www.dorseyentertainment.com from the ground up a couple months ago. Take a look, and if you are interested be sure and write me a message. Otherwise, good luck, and always make sure your working with a reputable, experienced company.

if you are considering having a website designed, i would take advantage of indian designers

simply because they are very cheap, and usually very good,

but you do have to make what you want VERY clear
