Try Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Fushigi Yuugi, Moon Phase, Air, DN Angel, Tsukikage Ran. For movies, try Princess Mononoke and Grave of Fireflys.

i don't really have any spectacular anime that i think you would like. I suggest you begin READING manga. it's SO much better than the shows. Why? cuz, the anime frequently cuts out a lot of the story.
Not to mention America has a way of literally *killing* the greatness of a series by adding our voice actors.
American Voice Actors SUCK!!
Oh yeah, Fist of the North Star is a certified classic. Watch that!!

Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The anime is thought provoking about religion and the meaning of life in general.
It follows a group of teenagers (though mostly one named Shinji Ikari) chosen to pilot giant mechas named the Evas, which are the only things that can destroy the Angels, who are attacking the human race.
The only male pilot, named Shinji, learns to deal with his father, the death of his mother, and other problems he has had, all of which are cruical parts and intertwine with the problems of the other characters.
2 Movies (Death and Rebirth and the End of Evangelion) and a 26 episode series, this Anime is worth it.

Basilisk, Ninja Scroll, Helsing, Appleseed, Fist of the North Star. I don't watch Anime cause it doesn't interest me but my roommate is into that bigtime. So you should check out those titles.
