You do not need to have the music on in order to dance.

However, you do need a "beat" in order to dance well. Whether you have some music on and are listening to it as you dance, or just imagine the music and beat in your head is your decision. But of course, it would be much easier to dance to a beat, if you could hear the music.

And, people watching you would appreciate the dancing along with the music. Because dancing and music just go together.

It makes sense. Doesn't it?

You don't necessarily need music to dance (either from externals or from within) - what you need is some kind of rhythm or beats. Because dance moves synchronises with beats. Then when you have music (melody + rhythm), the dance goes to a better dimension, because now you involve much more emotion. When the music comes from the externals, it is often richer than what we can recall from within, hence even greater the dance experience.

I've seen contemporary dance that was done without music. (Sorry, it was on youtube too but it got pulled). I don't think the dancers had the music in their heads either. They were exressing themselves through movement without any music.

Most people need music to dance because it cancells out other thoughts. It serves a "guide" for movement, making it easier. Something in our brains reacts to the musical patterns, that's why we dance to music. Other mammals that react to music are dogs, and some other I forget. But it seems like cats could care less. So I say it is something in our brains that makes us do it.

I always believed that everyone could hear the music by recall in their head, not so, many cannot. That is why the external source is needed in order to dance, since many people like to dance to the same rhythm, it works. Can you imagine a dance floor where everyone would dance to different music, it would be a collision course.

You don't. Sometimes the music is about the dance, sometimes the dance is about the music. But you don't need it.

I was a ballerina for 12 years when I was younger.

you don't need music to dance, if you are all alone and feel like dancing just let the movent out of your body...you can hear the music within and dance to your own tune...dance should make you feel free inside, sure music is also fun to dance to and helps keep a beat, but if you feel like dancing go for it! who needs music?!

Dance is the physical expression of music. It's definitional.

Dance is an internal feeling. You can dance without music and achieve the same result. Music and dance compliment each other.

have you ever seen any one dance w/out music? no, because there is always a beat of some kind in their head. try dancing w/out any beat at all, it's pretty hard and near impossible, now try to see a whole room of people trying it, see what i mean?
