South African transgendered people are a minority of a minority of a minority. They are gay, which puts them into a world that predominantly stresses the white gay male. Transgendered people are a minority in this community, and black transgendered people are an even smaller minority. There are probably a lot of black gay men or black transgendered people who just haven't been able to "come out" due to the Church-based nature of the African American Community. African Americans have, since slavery and throughout segregation, supported each other through the Church network. This is why the Church is also a fundamental part of African American life. To come out for a black man, especially a black transgendered person, means the very real possibility of having to leave behind your community to enter into another one, one where you will also be an even smaller minority.
