No negative effects on my daughter she has developed just the same as my other children who are right handed. I have heard that they are smarter because they use a different part of the brain but I don't know if it is true.

There is no effect of using one hand verses the other. BUT there is mental effects if you force a child to use the hand they naturally prefer not to use. If is medically and scientifically shown that children who are forced to use their non dominate hand (the one they don't prefer) they develop mental confusion. Their brain is telling them they want to do something but you are telling the brian it can't. When doing this you are trying to code how the brain thinks. When you do this it messes up othering thinking processes. Children who are forced to use a hand they do not chose to have been shown to have delays in school, behavior problems, and self esteem issues. When children were older and developed some of these problems (after research proved the theory) doctors and therapists would ask children to write with their other hand (their dominate one) and within weeks the children's behavior was calm and seemed like new people.

I know doesn't seem like it is such a dramatic thing. I actually wrote a paper on this in high school just a few years ago. Do some research to find out more effects this can cause on your child(ren).

As for a 5 month old...don't count on him using that hand forever. All babies use both hands. At that age their brain has not figured out which it wants to use so it experiments with both hands. My son is almost 3 and still uses both hands.

Interesting question because years ago that is what educators in America did. I personally think that a child at a very young age should be able to use the hand that seems natural to them. Many people use both. Probably many would have been left handed had they been given the opportunity. If you notice when we write 'English' it is from left to write. It is easier to write that way with your right hand. In other countries they write from right to left and the Orientals write from top to bottom. So, the real question here, I think is should educators or parents force there child to be in a mold that they have created that isn't necessarily a good idea. That is what might cause psychological problems down the road.

Does anyone else in the home use the left hand? My son is left handed and fortunately for me so is his father. I'm right-handed and when my son was old enough to tie his shoes or write, he asked me for help and I couldn't do it because I can't think left handed and i see left handed people write like 5 different ways!
Those are the only 2 drawbacks I have encountered with him and he's 17 now. If nobody else is left handed, it would be a good time for you to start training yourself so you can help him for when he is of age. Good luck and I hope this helps!
