A thousand dollars is too much for a shredder unless you're working for the DOD, in which case, you should send ME the thousand dollars in cash, I promise, I'm a perfectly reliable shredder salesperson!

Really, if you're paying that much for a shredder, forget it, and have your office AC redone with a central wood burning furnace, or water heater that you can stoke all night with the reams of classified documents.

For most home purposes, a fireplace works nicely as well.

It is generally safe to buy thirty dollar shredders from office depot, provided you don't have a lot of shredding to do at any one time. Indeed, it may be better for your office community if each office has it's own small shredder anyway. Surely it'll be cheaper!

As with purchasing anything on-line make sure it is a reputable company with a brick and mortar headquarters/location.

As far as paper shredders go, it depends on how much shredding you will be doing. Ensure it is a cross-cut shredder if you are looking for security.

PAPER SHREDDERS OR PAPER CUTTER ::>
(www.shredderwarehouse.com)

Paper shredders are used to cut paper into very fine strips or tiny paper chips. Government organizations, businesses, and private individuals use shredders to destroy private, confidential, or sensitive documents.

Privacy experts often recommend that individuals shred bills, credit card and bank account statements, and other documents that could be used by thieves to commit fraud or identity theft.

After the Supreme Court decision in California v. Greenwood, in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit the warrantless search and seizure of garbage left for collection outside of a home, paper shredders became more popular among private US citizens with privacy concerns.

However, shredded documents from cheaper shredders that are placed in the garbage can be collected and reassembled (see Unshredding). For maximum security, documents should be shredded so that the words of the document go through the shredder horizontally (i.e., perpendicular to the blades). Many of the documents in the Enron accountancy scandal were fed through the shredder the wrong way, making them easier to reassemble.
