I can't stand to see things thrown out that have practically nothing wrong with them. My clothes go from formal-work-gardening-garage rags- fire starters. My dishes and cups are all very nice, they just don't match; same with bedding, towels, furnature. I have no desire for a new vehicle. It runs fine even though it is 15 years old. Is this some kind of OCD or am I just remembering my childhood when we had to do with almost nothing?

You sound like you are living according to the book "The Millionaire Next Door". The only thing I might suggest is that after gardening you donate the clothes to Goodwill rather than go garage to rags to fire starters.
If you are happy with this then it is the best they to do. Don't get caught up in keeping up with the Joneses.

You find a lot of sentimental value in these things and in my opinion, that is good because I feel the same way towards some of my thing as well. I know how you must feel when given the idea of throwing something away which has been with you for so long. It's a bit heartbreaking isn't it? You'll think that, oh, that thing has been with me through all these years, it's been a part of my daily lives for such a long time, it has my touch all over it and i just can't imagine dumping it away, bla bla bla..... That's what you'll be thinking right? Well, there's nothing wrong with you, it's perfectly human-like. I wouldn't even say you're thrifty. Sometimes, life's like that.

I think you are just thrifty. and smart and you don't waste money on stuff that doesn't matter to you. I have an older car too, it has been a good car.So I really don't want to get rid of it. I have had so many cars that knew when my paycheck was coming...and broke down in time to spend it! I buy most of my clothes off the clearance rack, I end up with too much clothes...so I have given a lot away. I was able to really make a dent in my closet after Hurricane Katrina. Thousands of people were staying at the Civic Center here and I had fun loading up garbage bags with clothes so heavy I could barely move them...
And if your furniture is still comfortable and clean, no reason to replace it unless you just want something else. I bet you have a decent savings account? Lots of people have no savings and tons of debt...who's better off? duh!
I don't think you should wear rags everyday. and I don't think you should go without things you need and want as long as you can afford it.

You're none of the above. You're brilliant! I do most of the same things. (My furniture and cups match) Why would you even question yourself? Waste not, want not. I hear of so many people spending needlessly it makes me sick. You're doing great
and I'd keep it up if I were you.

You are probably remembering your childhood. You are wise. You will survive when others will not know what to do.
