We are a Constitution-based Federal Republic. Which basically means that we're a Federal Republic, like several other governments, but we have a supreme law of the land (Constitution), which regulates and outlines how our country is to be run. This helps keep elected leaders in check, so they cannot seize more power than they're entitled to.

A multi-layered federal Republic. Federal, state and cities can have different laws, but federal laws beat state laws which beat city laws. This layer style is what makes it federal. If the federal government were to have lost the Civil War, state laws would have overrulled the national government's laws. That's called a Confereracy.

The type of government of the US is undefined.
A government exist because the individuals that take part in it create it to function for the purpose they believe it should function for. The US government is an interesting one because it continuously shifts, grows, expands and then contracts on itself.
Many might believe that the civil war has ended, although the fight and loss of casualties in a war with bullets and cannons is our history, yet the economic challenges for control still exist. The problem is that it has become dogmatic and the global affairs with foreigner supper power houses understand our shifts more than we do.
What type of government does the United States have, or should we ask what type of government should we have? What type of government as Americans do we expect? or what type of government do we deserve? These are the questions we should ask ourselves, not merely a definition of a word we can find in a dictionary. Federation, Republic, Democracy, Theocracy, Dictatorship, Socialist, Communist.......
I am not a rebel, I love America, I love liberty, I love my freedom.
I only ask what is the future of the United States, considering the global world is tired of the US control. Especially considering when the US is in control, we are not very good at it, and we tend to not care about the things we destroy. This is not greatness, it is greed.
What type of government does the United States have? A young one. To young to understand the responsibility it posses as the world leader, so in time we lose the lead.
What type of government do we need in order to become world leaders again? What type of leaders do we need to form our government?

It is a Federal Republic. The people and the constitution share sovereignty, but the people elect voices to serve as their own, who do not need to answer to the public except in election years. This disconnect is by design, the people, though sovereign were not trusted with democracy. Republic isn't so bad.
