Blue Zircon is traditionally Decembers birthstone. Because of the cost and rarity of the stone, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, and Blue Topaz were adopted as alternative stones because they are more readily available.

All birthstones were invented by the jewelry industry to sell more stones.

Just like greeting card company's invented grandparents day, to sell more cards.

Tanzanite was recently founded. It didn't exist 30-40 years ago. It only comes from one hill in Tanzania. So in order to sell more of it they 'stuck' it in December.

..in addition. After some asking around it seems that Blue Zircon (or Blue Topaz) and Turquoise are the most accepted stones. Tanzanite wasn't added to the list until very recently. (Prob just to sell more of these stones)
