Yeah but the angel opens her eyes. It cant be a dead baby. I think it may have something to do with someone dying and then a new baby takes over what she left off maybe( the confusion that was hers, belongs now to the baby down the hall.) try www.songfacts.com and search for the song. The site is not working right now for some reason.

Lightning crashes a new mother cries
her placenta falls to the floor
the angel opens her eyes
the confusion sets in
before the doctor can even close the door
lightning crashes an old mother dies
her intentions fall to the floor
the angel closes her eyes
the confusion that was hers
belongs now to the baby down the hall
oh now feel it coming back again
like a rolling thunder chasing the wind
forces pulling from the center of the earth again
i can feel it
lightning crashes a new mother cries
this moment shes been waiting for
the angel opens her eyes
pail blue colored eyes
presents the circle
and puts the glory out to hide hide
ohh now feel it coming back again
like a rolling thunder chasing the wind
forces pulling from the center of the earth again
i can feel it

The band dedicated this to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time this song was written. Her brother in-law explains:
"The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! "Lightning Crashes" literally lives on. (thanks, Cory - York, PA)
At their concerts in the late 1990s, the band dedicated this to the victims of the tragedy at Columbine High School.
This was the biggest hit off the album and of Live's entire career

at the beginning, I think it says something about "a new mother cries..... her placenta falls to the floor", so I'm guessing it might be something about a miscarriage. (pretty graphic, I know). but the rest of the song seems kind of unrelated, so I'm not sure about the whole thing
