It always used to but has become mute. Not a joke this, but I only hear it when it boils and clicks off. Why?

If I understand right, does the steam cause the singing? If so, the spot where it realeases can be blocked with buildup from anything that may be in your water, such as iron or any other foreign, yet normal, particals. Are there any signs of white crud anywhere from sediments and what-not? If so, that's probably your problem. It will need a thorough cleaning or get a new pot!

there is a tiny button underneath. It may have been accidently pushed to Off when you lifted/put the kettle down.

Its probably not very happy, who can blame it with cold winter night on thier way.

Try cleaning the nozzle/spout with a descaler, that might help it.

Maybe its very old and now worn out. Also, if you overfill it that could cause the problem.
