If you mean the hen's egg and not just any egg, the answer is neither. They both evolved from more primitive forms together.

Metaphors are always a great discussion piece. The egg as, an idea, always comes first. But the egg is laid by a chicken who had the idea! So what comes first is the chicken! Now, remember that we are talking in metaphors.
Now, let us consider evolution. The fact that mutations that lead to possible new species, occur in the egg development stage, then then egg always comes first.
So we go back into history with all these new innovative adaptions that have arisen from the egg. Evolution has shown that evolving to the the best practise of survival is a sustainable trait. So where did the first egg come from? It is a fantastic question that can only be answered by one answer.
At the dawn of the world, in a rock pool on forsaken beach that has been pounded by solar radiation, volcanic eruptions and drastic changes in temperature, most likely a group of chemicals came together that had never met before. The conditions are right, you can if you like, imagine organ music from a Frankenstein movie, I rather like the sound of the clap of thunder as the chemicals combined to form RNA or even DNA. Thus the animal began to evolve. This, to me, is definitely the ultimate chicken came before the egg.

Going by evolution, the egg would have been the source of the very first hen. The egg would have been a mutant product of the reptile that laid it. The egg was definitely created first.

The egg has been around for hundreds of millions of years before there were any chickens.

Well, If you must ask. It had to be the chicken because with out a chicken the egg would have died, as there would be on one to keep it warm.
