Can I just phone up the vet and pick up the antibiotics or will they need me to bring her in to see her first? Shes a pet rat and the antibiotic is baytril, she has been on it 3 times before and I want to save her the stress of taking her in to the vet again, she hates it! (Vets arent open for another 2 hours, thats why I havent phoned them to ask!)

I guess it would depend on the vet. Maybe if you call and let them know she is having the same signs as last time when they put her on the antibiotic. Then again, they may need to see her due to that antibiotic may not be working. Sometimes the body gets used to the antibiotic and it stops working. Good luck and glad to hear I'm not the only rat lover. Sadly mine passed away last Feb. from a cancerous tumor.

Hmm. Mycoplasmia?

I seem to remember that my vet would generally mix up some antibiotic in a tasty substrate, allow me to pick it up, and use as directed. I was to notify them if my ratty's symptoms didn't improve.

But my vet is probably not your vet, of course, so this may not apply. Just wait for their office to open and ask them if they can simply give your a prescription or whether an exam is required. Rat's are pretty resilient, and can handle a little stress now and then.

Ignore anyone who suggests letting nature take its course.

If your baby does have a recurring respiratory infection , then she may need something stronger than Baytril.

I would ring the vet and ask if you can get bayril and doxycycline. This combination will help if she has a nasty infection.

How old is she? And if this is happening repeatedly, there maybe something in her environment thats setting her off. What bedding is she on, because this can make a big difference in respiratory problems.

Only the vet can answer that question. I wonder why your rat gets sick so much. Maybe you should talk to your vet about some vitamins or a diet change. Is she in a cold area often? Good luck hope she gets better fast.

Phone them when they open
or
Take the little rat in the car and wait for them to open.

I took mine in the car but didnt have a box at the time. There were some stressfull times as 'Eddie' ran under the brake pedal lol.

A cold? That's a virus, antibiotics don't help that. Either what you are treating isn't a cold, or thats the reason you're still giving the little guy antibiotics. As far as I'm concerned nature should take its course, let it die.

TALK TO YOUR VET ABOUT GETTING A SUPPLY FROM THEM WHEN NEEDED, MOST WILL DO IT, BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM! IT DOES NOT HURT TO ASK! SO PHONE THE VET,MAY HAVE TO TAKE HER IN FOR THIS VISIT, THEN MAYBE NO MORE?

Just call and ask... If they need you to bring her in and you don't have time, set an appointment for tomorrow or something. Also: it is okay to put a little bit of cough syrup in their water to take care of sneezing or flegm and stuff (if she has any of those symptoms)
