The GRE is for people who wish to pursue a graduate degree, and includes many disciplines. It is similar to the ACT/SAT for undergraduate college, but harder. There are alternative specialized tests for certain disciplines like law , masters in business, and medical school.

All that taking the GRE tells you is that they are trying to enter a graduate school. It does not tell you what degree they are pursuing. The GRE is generalized and many grad schools require it, however some require a more specialized test for their area such as the MCAT (medical schools and some Vet med schools)or the VCAT (Vet med schools). However even knowing a more specific test might not tell you what degree they are pursuing as their are only a few graduate entrance tests and many degrees so they are each used by multiple degree programs. I took the GRE to get into Vet school but my sister took it to get into a psychology program.

The GRE is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in English speaking countries. It is created and administered by the Educational Testing Service and is similar in format and content to the SAT.
- So it's basically an SAT for graduate schools.
