I have a 85 chevy monte carlo w/ 305 cid eng. and 350 turbo trans. I have potiential when reving but when in gear theres great potiential loss. i want to know is there any reason why iam being disappointed besides needing to get a bigger engine or boring over the 305 what are other possible ways of getting better performance without going BROKE. the engines rebuilt and the trans has less than 100,ooo miles.

After reading some of your answers I'm surprised none suggested dumping the tranny. Surly 7-10% of power loss is through an slippery automatic transmission. Must be a manual to ensure direct power to the rear wheels.

My last 305 had no balls either. Don't waste money trying to rebuild power into it. Switch engines and you will be happier in the long run. A crate 350 will get you down the road, but Chevy has been putting out some pretty rad small blocks right off the shelf, virtually bolt right in. That '85 dog of a 305 is just going to suck your time and money and never give a good result. Sorry kid.

This should be easy....
You say the engine was just rebuilt? Could you or the engine builder installed an over power band cam ??? Most people call them and RV cam... You need to rethink your cam and Carb setup. You need a mild performance cam and get a good carb 650 or 700 CFM (any good brand)... Double check timing also. And make sure your not dumping to much fuel when in gear...

Next Near 100,000 on the transnission, Get it over hauled and make sure the builder can modify it for street or strip use on just install B & M shift kit....

Next: Rear gear any Posi or Limited slip rear end would be good but you want fuel mileage also for sure... 3.55 to 3.60 would do you fine... But I would go with 3:73

This will get you started... Also use 93 Octane fuel No cheap stuff

obvious would be putting a 350 in it, lol to tell u the truth, the 305 doesnt have much power, but, cam work, headers GOOD Exhaust system, even if its only 15 horses at a time, Every extra horse counts, 4 11s or 3 73s would help alot also, what about nos? just joking about the nos, but your best bet would be, going to a dealer or google parts for your car do some research on the sites about your car, and look at other cars with the same engine size, see what they have price what u can get and if its in the price range get it, see how many horses it adds and dont just rush to get somthing take your time and find the best deal, just my .02

It plenty heavy sufficient. there's a difficulty with the transmission. The 350 is a better ideal trans than the metric. Have a trans save look it over. If it received't bypass into any equipment, opposite, pressure, any, then you fairly have a linkage problem. If it is going into equipment yet received't bypass then between the snatch packs is burned up. Is the fluid sparkling and on the right element? sturdy success.

Put some 4:11's or higher in the rear. You'll definately notice and its not a huge expense. Other than that, cam, headwork, carburater upgrade, headers, etc.
