Actually the way it works, is yes you do have to use the remote, but you have to make sure you are within such and such distence from the sensors. I don't think there is an adapter for NES-GameCube controllers, HOWEVER there are four ports for the gamecube controllers that I think that in the future they will have adapters made at that you're not draining batteries during SMB3, you know?

Currently, The Only Games Using The Classic Controller Are, well, The Classic Games Available For The Virtual Console..

And For Those Games, They Do Not Require The Remote, But It Has To Plug Into The Remote So It Can Transmit Your Control To The Wii..

I Don't Understand Why They Just Have A Shell For The Wii Remote, Or Just Have It Wireless, But That's What They Chose To Do, And Does Seem To Give That 'Classicl Feel To It..

In Other Words: Classic Controller Connects To Wii Remote, But Remote Is Not Neccessary For Play On Virtual Console Games And Is Put Aside For Classic Gameplay..
Think Of It As Your Wireless Cord Extension..

As For Other Info On The Classic Controller:
I Recall That There's No Rumble For It
Look For The 'Free Wii Points' Sticker On The Package To Get A Free Number Of Points
I Do Not Recall How Long The Cord Is, At The Moment, But It Should Be At Least The Lenght Of The Nunchuk Unit.
