most short story publishers want the story to be under 5000 words. Some want 3000 max. If you have a short story you think is publishable go to www.grimmyproductions.co.uk. Submission guidelines are on the site.

Research your source eg. If your story is romance then check your local magazine content and send them a polite letter (never your story first!) enquiring whether they might be interested in reading something of yours. It never hurts to be very humble to Editors! One tip I did learn if your story is (for example) a mother daughter overcoming drama/trauma suitable for Mothers Day then inquire way ahead of time, if perhaps your story is Christmasy send your enquire in May so they have plenty of time to get your story to where it is appropriate. If perhaps Father's Day start canvasing in January! It takes a huge amount of patience and some money as well sending it to Editors some folk get disappointed with refusals they just go ahead pay the amount asked and self-publish, but that is risky.

You can put it online, but what you really mean is in a book right? Look into anthologies and literary journals. My school makes a literary journal every year where the students submit stuff and the best gets published.
